The Baker-Bird Wine Cellar is the longest and oldest wine cellar that is open to the public in America today. Standing in the middle of this vast structure during a tour of the winery it is an awe inspiring experience. Consider for a moment attempting to build a 90 feet long by 40 feet wide by 40 feet tall structure buried into the hillside of the Baker property in the 1860’s!
This is an amazing architectural feat! The massive cylinder is lined with hand stacked stones. The top stones are laid as rubble which is a style that is very haphazard in nature—almost whimsical. The lower section is dressed stone and very orderly much like the German immigrants who built it.
Cool and slightly moist it is the perfect environment for storing wine or organizing a company or social event. Yes, you guessed it, the cellar is for rent and an interesting venue to house your next business or social gathering. Drink service and catering are available to suit your needs and tastes.
